Progress is a strange concept. Do we make progress? Or does progress make us?
Since the 90’s when personal computing became ubiquitous the human species has stared at progress bars slowly marching across screens. Rendering, downloading, uploading, installing, updating…. the computer is making progress. Are we? In 30 years computers have gone from fancy calculators to instruments of mass surveillance.
Don’t we all wish we could stop progress for a moment? To lift our heads, take stock, plan ahead? But we can’t. Time and tide drive us ever forward. Who is driving? To what end?
